Deepavali weekend in Singapore: Little India, transport and evening crowds

Three tiles: Little India light-up to 29 November, Festival Village to 8 November, and two MRT stations for getting there

Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, and Little India is where many people head for the lights and the bazaar. This post sets out what is on, how to get there, and what PantauSivik's own station crowd records can and cannot tell you about the evenings. Our post on the three coming long weekends has the wider calendar. This one goes deeper on Little India.

In short: Deepavali is Sunday 8 November 2026, and Monday 9 November is a public holiday if your rest day falls on 8 November. The Little India light-up runs to 29 November and the Festival Village on Campbell Lane to 8 November. Reach Little India by MRT at Little India or Farrer Park, and check platform crowds, including the 30 and 60 minute forecasts, before you head home.

The dates

The Ministry of Manpower lists Deepavali on Sunday 8 November 2026 and says Monday 9 November is a public holiday if your rest day falls on 8 November. For most people that means a long weekend from Saturday 7 to Monday 9 November. Your employer's arrangement is the one that counts.

What is on in Little India

Getting to Little India

Two MRT stations serve the area: Little India on the North East Line and the Downtown Line, and Farrer Park on the North East Line. Serangoon Road runs between them, so you can walk the lights from one station to the other.

What nine days of station data show

PantauSivik records a station's crowd level each time it changes, using the Land Transport Authority's data. Little India is one station with two line codes, North East Line and Downtown Line, and both carry the same reading. We looked at it from Saturday 17 to Sunday 25 October. For each evening from 6pm to 10pm, we counted the share of ten minute readings, 24 per evening, that were Moderate or High, and compared it with all other stations.

Bar chart of the share of 6pm to 10pm that Little India station was Moderate or High each day from 17 to 25 October, against all stations. The two Sundays, 18 and 25 October, are highest at 38 and 42 percent. Weekday evenings are 4 to 12 percent.

Treat this as a hint, not a forecast. It is nine days, for one station, and we cannot say why Sundays were busier. Deepavali weekend itself may look different, and a station level says nothing about the streets or the bazaar. For the network as a whole, see our look at when and where MRT stations get busy.

A short plan for the evening

  1. A day or two before, open Public Alerts and look for train faults on the North East and Downtown lines.
  2. On the day, open the Trip Planner and pick your route.
  3. Before you head home, check the platform crowd view and switch between Now, +30, +60 and +90 minutes. A short wait can mean a calmer platform.
  4. If you drive, check carpark availability first.

Eventful suggests going on a weeknight after 8pm, because weekends close to Deepavali get packed. That is the site's advice, not an official figure. In our data, weeknight evenings at Little India were mostly Low and Sunday evenings were not, which fits it loosely, but use the live view rather than a rule of thumb.

What PantauSivik cannot tell you

It does not show how crowded the streets are, whether a shop is open, or road closures that have not been published. The crowd levels are estimates from public data and describe the station, not the train.
